Occasionally in the past we've seen the odd Stag Beetle or two in our garden. One year we were lucky enough to see two but couldn't be sure if they were mating or fighting so we left them to it (it turned out they were fighting).
Both yesterday and today we've seen a solitary Stag Beetle meander across the new patio:
Not sure if he approves of the patio, has moved in or is just out on his nightly manoeuvres but it's good to see him (or her!). He tends to walk on the left-hand side of the patio, whereas the toads nightly manoeuvres under the cover of darkness take place on the right-hand side of the patio behind where our loungers are. Who said there's no wildlife in London?
